About the Event

In opera, the aria plays an essential role. While recitative tends to drive forward the storyline, the aria is an opportunity to linger on emotional drama - and showcase a vocalist's talent and range. The transcendent beauty or powerful outburst of an aria is often the central feature of an opera, and many of the legendary performers became so because of their mastery of these epic moments. An excuse to showcase the technical skill and range of the performer, arias are notoriously difficult, and - often as a result - exceedingly beautiful.

An aria is particularly suited to expressing subtle layers in a seemingly straightforward storyline - particularly when it comes to arias for the soprano. In the opera, the soprano is traditionally a tragic or heroic figure, prone to heartbreak and abandonment and thus bursts of emotional energy. The selection of arias in this program range from the multi-layered and complicated - like Zerlina’s cloying lament in Mozart’s Don Giovanni, to the ethereal and romantic - like Rusalka’s plea to the moon to reveal her unrequited love in Dvorak’s opera Rusalka, to the somewhat insane - like Elvira recalling a lover’s voice in Bellini’s I Puritani. Join us in an evening of exploration of the role of the aria in opera - and bask in the beauty of pure emotional expression.
